Prescriptions and Referrals

Repeat prescriptions for regular medications may sometimes be provided without your needing to see your doctor.    We do ask that you give doctor one week’s notice.   There will usually be a fee for this service of between $5 and $10.

It is necessary to have a referral from your GP in order to consult a specialist. Health Department regulations require this referral in order for you to be able to obtain a medicare rebate for the visit. These regulations also prevent referrals from being backdated. It is therefore necessary for you to request and collect referrals prior to your specialist appointment. We require at least one week’s notice for your doctor to write any referral.  A consultation is required if you have not had a referral to a particular specialist from your doctor previously.

Specialist fees differ from those charged in General Practice and we advise you to contact the specialist for this information. It is also the responsibility of the specialist’s rooms to advise you, the patient, if a new referral is required  when you are making an appointment.
